DirectoRS Report

With Dave “Hoot’n” Hartree

Welcome to another edition of our newsletter, I trust you are all well and have been getting some riding done. The ride to Mandorah and Litchfield Tavern was great with good company on a nice road and with favourable weather as well.

I would like to welcome the new members to our chapter: Bryan Wilds, Paul Whitmore, and Tim Clilverd, may you experience the friendship and common bond of motorcycling enthusiasm that is to be found within our chapter. I look forward to seeing you at our events, welcome to the chapter.

March finds us moving the monthly meeting venue from PINT club to Top End Upholsterers (Geoff’s shed) at 18 Adams Rd, Palmerston, which hopefully will help in keeping our funds within our club, with respect to food and drinks at these meetings. If you have special needs in this regard please let Geoff know so that we can accommodate your needs/taste.

It is also good to see Doug back from Bali safe and well and riding his bike (even if we can’t hear him).

There was a good turnout at the wake that was held at the Patriots clubhouse in paperbark way, and we look forward to the opening of the new premises in the near future.

We have received the new shipment of Darwin Chapter pins, and these are available along with Darwin Chapter rockers from me at NT Motorcycle Centre or at our monthly meetings for $5 each.

That’s about all I’ve got for this edition, so stay safe and Ride with Pride, see you at the meeting,

ASSISTANT DirectoRS Report

Hi all , the year is moving ahead quite quick but I suppose it does when you get older. Things are looking good for the ride and activities calendar for this year, lots to do I hope the turn out of members is high.

Meeting at Batchelor
Photo: Brian Sweeting
On Saturday the committee went down to Batchelor to have another look at the rally site. On that day, as I was driving not riding, I had a good look at our formation from a car drivers perspective. One of the things I noticed was how many bikes in the club have a very dull tail light, while others can be seen very clear. Maybe if we all have a look at this on our bikes as some may require only cleaning the inside of the lens cover, or a new light bulb.

As a lot of people may know, there has been a rivalry between Doug and Mark over who has the fastest bike.  It has been enjoyable over the last year or so watching these two, so now it’s time to get things settled. Mark now wants to line up at the first drag meeting with Doug at Hidden Valley, to make it official which one is faster, maybe a few other bikes may like to join them and work out which bike is the fastest in the club. Maybe we will have to work out power to weight ratio to make it more fair on some of us more solid looking blokes.

Safety Officers Report

With Geoff Theodore

RIDE RULES

1.      Arrive with a full tank of fuel and an empty bladder. Fuel stops will be made as required along the way.

2.      Have appropriate riding gear for expected conditions.

3.      The nominated Ride Captain leads the group. DO NOT OVERTAKE him or her.

4.      A motor cycle requires a FULL LANE to operate safely. We ride in STAGGERED FORMATION and NOT SIDE BY SIDE.

STAGGERED FORMATION:

·         One second rule: The bike to the left or right of you should not be less than one second ahead of you.

·         Two second rule: Maintain two seconds between you and the bike in front of you.

·         Four second rule: Your eyes should be watching a few bikes ahead of you, not fixed on the bike in front of you.

5.      We only use one lane of a multi lane highway. That is the lane the Road Captain is using.

6.      Maintain a constant speed, this helps prevent the “Rubber Band” effect. Always adhere to the speed limits.

7.      A rider will be nominated to ride at the rear of the group. It is his or her responsibility to ensure that the riders DO NOT GET LOST and to render assistance if necessary.

8.      The group as a whole MUST NOT stop for an indivdual as it can be dangerous to have the whole group stop on the side of the road. The nominated Tail End rider will stop and render assistance.

9.      When we do stop as a group, be sure to park well off the road.

10.  ALWAYS signal your intention to change lanes. Keep a safe distance behind the rider in front, CHECK YOUR MIRRORS often and concentrate on your riding.

11.  If every rider can see the rider behind him or her in the mirrors, the group should not get split up. Adjust your speed to do so.

12.  We ride as a GROUP to and from our destination until we split up to go home. KEEP THE GROUP TOGETHER, TRY NOT TO LAG BEHIND. Rides will be listed as HOG or NON-HOG. On a HOG ride, only HARLEYS may be ridden but friends or visitors may meet us at the destination. On a NON-HOG ride, members friends or visitors may ride NON-HARLEYS but at the rear of the group. In both cases any friends or visitors will be the responsibility of the member who invited them.

13.  Riders in doubt about ANY aspect of the ride should ask the Road Captain or appointed Road Marshall for assistance.

14.  Although it is a group, ride saftey is a personal responsibilty

15.  Novices or riders new to the group should ride towards the back until they are comfortable

16.  If it isn’t safe to pass, go through an intersection or turn:  DON’T.

17.  In spite of what the group does pass as if you were riding alone (within formation).

Text Box: INTERESTING STATISTIC
Regardless of where you stand on the issue of the U.S. involvement in Iraq, here's a sobering statistic:

There has been a monthly average of 160,000 troops in the Iraq theatre of operations during the last 22 months, and a total of 2,112 deaths. That gives a firearm death rate of 60 per 100,000 soldiers.

The firearm death rate in Washington D.C. is 80.6 per 100,000 persons for the same period.

That means that you are about 25% more likely to be shot and killed in the U.S. Capital than you are in Iraq.

Conclusion: The U.S. should pull out of Washington. J

With Michelle “Shell” Redding

Hello Everyone,

My how time flies, once again its time for the newsletter and I still haven’t managed to get any events scheduled for the calendar.

I have however spoken to Michelle Hanton, Dragons Abreast.  This year they also have a very full calendar and all their members will be attending the Sunshine Coast from 23 September to 7 October for “Breast Australia”, with over 2000 participants from around the world.

As the National HOG Rally in South Australia is scheduled for late October and a number of our members will be attending this event, it’s looking extremely unlikely that we would be able to schedule the “BOOBS ON THE MOVE” ride during October.

There is the option of having the event in the dry season however it wouldn’t be Breast Cancer Month and this is when our club calendar is extremely full and most of our members will have their hands full with other events such as the “Tri Chapter Challenge” and the “State Rally”.

It’s my opinion that we should make ‘BOOBS ON THE MOVE” event Bi Annual (every two years).  Michelle from Dragons Abreast is agreeable with this, if we did not want to schedule the event during the dry season.

This topic will be included on the agenda at the next meeting so if you have any views on this, make sure you’re there.
